Here are answers to some of the most common,

frequently asked questions and mysteries about the show.

What happened to Grandma's stained glass window?

In the fourth season episode of "The House", Grandpa installs a meaningful stained glass window for Grandma in their bedroom for her to cherish instead of letting it succumb to demolition.

The director of this episode chose to have Grandpa install the window in the wall facing the front of the house. Allowing the window to stay in this location would affect the appearance of the front of the house as this wall can be seen frequently on the exterior shots of the home. A decision that the show producer most likely would not have preferred.

Had the choice been made to install the window on the back wall near Grandma's rocking chair then the window may have become part of the permanent set and continued to be seen in later episodes.

Further complicating the situation is that the front window in their room was actually a double window when viewed from the front of the house.

In Season 5 the window does in fact make a second appearance in "The Long Night" when Grandpa cleans his room and the window in the hopes the Grandma will return from the hospital after her stroke. The shot seen on the inside of the house reveals that this wall is not quite perpendicular like would be expected when compared to the exterior of the house. This of course is typical of all interiors sets of the Waltons home.

Where does the door in the living room near the grandparents bedroom go?

You wouldn't be blamed if you thought the door that is never used in the living room located near the front door, was a second entrance into the Grandparent's room.

In the season 4 episode of "The Quilting" Olivia helps Grandma unpack after her trip to help a sick relative. A rare insert shot reveals that the door in her bedroom leads to a closet. It is possible then that the door in the living room is offset and doesn't line up with the door in the grandparents room. Most likely the door in the living room is a coat closet. It is also possible that the two closets are connected with a walk through section.

Sometimes though these frequently unused doors will serve a different purpose to suits the director of each episode.

What's behind the door near the stove?

The door in the kitchen near the stove is another door of contention among fans of the show. It is not used often but occassionally Grandma and Olivia can be seen bringing supplies and items like a mop or broom from this room. It is safe to assume that it is likely a storage room or kitchen pantry.

What is going on with the upstairs bedrooms?

For budget reasons, only 3 bedrooms and a bathroom were built for scenes on the second floor. There's John-Boy's room, the boy's room and then there is the room down the hall between John-Boy's room and the bathroom. This set was used for both the girl's and parents bedroom. The set was redecorated by the crew depending on which one was needed for a scene.

This led to challenges when wide shots were required in the hallway and characters were seen moving from room to room.

At times a bedroom could be seen behind the bathroom door and the bathroom was seen behind the boy's room door. Even a false wall would sometimes cut off the hallway that usually led to the parents bedroom door.
