Description:

Cousin Olivia returns to Walton's Mountain while she recuperates after the loss of her husband Bob Hill. Elizabeth's cat Calico, gives birth to kittens but Elizabeth will learn a lesson about grief that cousin Olivia knows all too well.

Prologue:

"Sometimes life goes on in peaceful cycles like the seasons, a gradual blending of time and events that we scarcely notice, and just as we think we may have learned all there is to know about life, fate conspires to show us just how little we do know. Such was the case one especially beautiful day in early Fall. Our parents had told us that Olivia Hill had lost her husband in an accident and that she was coming to spend a few weeks with us."

Synopsis:

Olivia Hill comes to stay withy the family after the passing of her husband. The children help to get the garden shed/guest house ready for John-Boy who will be giving up his room for the next 3 weeks. It has only been a year since cousin Olivia marriedher husband Bob. John-Boy and Olivia bring her home from the bus station. Elizabeth brings her cat Calico for cousin Olivia to meet. While helping at the stove, Mary Ellen remembers back to when young Olivia had been been last at the Walton home for her wedding. They are of similiar age and Mary Ellen feels a kinship to young Olivia. At dinner young Olivia tries to stay positive but quickly becomes overwhelmed by grief and runs to her bedroom. Olivia goes to be with her and offer comfort. The next day John asks Olivia to help him in the Mill while he finishes building some benches for an order. Jason and Ben show up and try to prevent cousin Olivia from doing any work. Ben says that she should be resting which causes her to become upset.

The children decide to work on a secret project in an attempt to cheer her up. Elizabeth’s cat is looking fat and they wonder if she is overweight or about to have kittens. They believe that she is about 14 years old so they plan to ask the veterinarian to look at her when he is scheduled to stop by in a few days.

John-Boy takes cousin Olivia for a walk to Drucilla's Pond for a break from the family. She becomes hysterical when they remember back to her wedding night. John-Boy pushes her into the pond to cool off. She comes out laughing her head off. When the vet, Dr. Culler stops by he confirms that Calico is in fact about to deliver kittens. He suggests that they make a bed for her in the house. As the family is finishing supper the children go off and return with the present for cousin Olivia. They have built her a kite but The reminder of her husband’s favorite hobby is too much for her to bare and she retreats to the bedroom.

Calico begins to deliver her babies and the family gathers around to try and help. With difficulty she gives birth to three kittens but she ends up dying in the process. Olivia comes down to the kitchen and takes charge in helping feed and care care for the new born kittens. They need constant feeding during the first 24 hours. She asks the family for the various items she needs. Elizabeth is very upset by the death of her cat. She asks young Olivia if the pain she feels is the same as hers. Young Olivia says that what they feel is the same but with time that pain will go subside.

When the time comes for young Olivia to return home to Richmond, Elizabeth gives her the female kitten from the batch hoping that maybe Olivia will call her Calico 2.

Epilogue:

"Our family learned a lot that Fall about life, about loss, but mostly about loving, thanks to Olivia and to Calico."
