Ep.5 - The Romance

  Original Airdate: October 10, 1974
Writer: Hindi Brooks
Director: Ivan Dixon

Prologue:

"Life on Waltons Mountain never seemed more stable than when I was 18 and in college. It was comforting to know that the family was always there, knowing exactly what they were doing, and accepting it as the right and necessary way to live. Each of us has a secret life, private dreams and aspirations and fantasies that we are hesitant to share with others. I had always associated my mother with our home, and thought the boundaries of her life were within the walls of that house. Then, one day, I happened to stumble across my mother's private dream."

Synopsis:

John-Boy sees his mother sitting near Drucilla's Pond and he sneaks up on her and discovers that she has been doing watercolors of the mountain scenery. He is amazed at her talent and suggests that she take free night classes at the Charlottesville High School. They go to the school to register and find a watercolor class on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9pm. In order for her to go though he offers to teach her how to drive.

As dinner Mary Ellen says that there is an injection now that will prevent whooping cough. Olivia announces that John-Boy is teaching her to drive so that she can go to night school to learn about art. John understands Olivia's need to try something different but Grandma can't understand all this need for change and wants everything to stay the same.

Olivia makes her way to her first class. She meets the teacher Joshua Williams but is intimidated by the blank art paper in front of her. They are doing charcoal drawings of a bowl of apples. She finally gets the look of the apples right. After class she shows Joshua the watercolor she has been working on. He has other designs though and invites Olivia out for a coffee. She accepts but Joshua is looking for more than just innocent conversation about art. He tries to fill her with the desire to dream of a life beyond her normal existence. She continues to remind he though that she is happy with the life she has chosen. Later she goes with her class on a field trip to the Richmond Museum to look at famous works of art. At the end of their excursion though Joshua kisses her. Feeling awkward Olivia decides to no longer attend classes. John discusses the dilemma with Olivia and feels that she should deal with the issue and resolve it. Joshua arrives at her home to apologize. Olivia explains that she is happy with her life and although she is flattered by his attention she is sorry that he didn't believe her. John overhears the two speaking and is pleased with how Olivia handles the situation. When Joshua asks he gives his blessing for Olivia to return to art class.

Secondary Story:

Mary Ellen begins to date Don Millman. He wants to be a doctor. Mary Ellen fantasizes that he would be the perfect match as she desires to be a nurse. As they continue to talk though she discovers that maybe she wants to be a doctor too. This causes tension between the two as he feels her wanting to compete with him. After a few days Don returns and asks Mary Ellen if they can continue their relationship. Later that night he even whistles a bird call to her from the road after the family has retired as a good night signal. Mary Ellen whistle's back as only she can do.

Epilogue:

"The mountain coloured our lives when we lived in its shadow, and even after, when the course of our lives led us far away. Wherever I may be, with the coming of night, also comes the whisper of those long-ago voices."
