Ep.18 - The Courtship

  Original Airdate: January 25, 1973
Writer: Jeb Rosebrook
Director: Harry Harris

"It was Spring on Walton's Mountain, that special time when all of life seeks and finds its own renewal and strength. A time when the season, like the mountain, calls back those whose lives have taken them so many miles and years away from the land. One of those who was called back in that Spring of 1933 was my mother's uncle. His name was Cody Nelson and he'd come all the way home from Cincinatti Ohio."

Uncle Cody Nelson arrives on Walton's Mountain to visit Olivia and her family for a forced vacation when the banks are closed temporarily. He works as an accountant for a bank in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has never been married and it is obvious that he has given everything to his career. The Walton adults decide to introduce him to some eligible women in the community. John-Boy believes that Cordelia Hunnicut is the right choice for Uncle Cody. She is full of life and Uncle Cody needs to laugh. Grandma and Olivia are not so keen as she has been married 4 times already. John-Boy, Olivia and Esther go over to Cordelia's house to invite her for dinner and she accepts their offer.

Olivia has baked Uncle Cody a birthday cake. He remarks that this is his first birthday cake in 30 years. Quickly a romance blossoms between Cordelia and Cody. After a week though of movies dancing and picnics Olivia pressures Cordelia to come clean about her romantic past. Cody is shocked to learn about her previous 4 husbands. With some time to think it over he decides that he would prefer to live his remaining days with her and with John-Boy's help he goes to her place to ask her hand in marriage. They are married the following day at the Walton's home by Reverend Fordwich and John-Boy stands as the best man.

Secondary Story:

Grandpa has been trying to catch a particular Catfish in Drucilla's Pond for more than 30 years. He takes Uncle Cody fishing which results in the two of them getting dunked in the pond and Grandpa's nemesis getting away yet again.

"Cody's bank did re-open, and he was hired back to his old job in the Accounting Department. There he remained until his retirement a year later. Great Uncle Cody died in 1953, and Cordelia followed him within 6 months. There are many who believe that she died of a broken heart."

Episode Notes and Interesting Facts:

  • Actor Eduard Franz re-appears as Colonel Linville in "The Collision" (s4-ep24)
  • The character name Cody Nelson is a nod to Nelson County were Earl Hamner grew up and the location of the REAL Walton's Mountain of his childhood. On the show the Waltons live in the fictitious Jefferson County. Jefferson County most likely got its name as a nod to Thomas Jefferson who's historic home in located 25 miles away from the REAL and fictitious Walton's Mountain in Charlottesville.
