Ep.3 - The Calf

  Original Airdate: September 28, 1972
Writer: Jim Byrnes
Director: Harry Harris

Prologue:

"Waltons Mountain was an everlasting presence in our lives. Whenever I could, when I was growing up there during the Depression years, I would climb its slopes. Up there I could get lost in dreams, dreams of becoming a writer, of becoming a man. I knew no writers so I had no writer to model myself after, but as a boy aspiring to manhood I had only to follow in the footsteps of a remarkable father."

Synopsis:

John and Olivia are overwhelmed by their bills but can still have fun catching fireflies outside with the the children. John heads off to work up the mountain but he breaks the truck's axle after hitting a large pothole.

When Chance their milking cow wanders off to give birth, Grandpa finds her with a new calf. The children grow attached and Jason names him Bullit because he is a bull but John knows that he has to sell the calf to pay for the truck and other bills.

George Anderson a neighbor down the road buys the cow for $9. When Chance won't stop bellowing for her baby Olivia decides to sell her memory quilt to help raise the money to buy Bullit back from Mr. Anderson but he now wants $12.

Jim-Bob and Elizabeth learn that the cow will be slaughtered for beef so they take Bullit away from Mr. Anderson's farm and hide in a place called Brian's Cave. They are found and when Mr. Anderson comes to collect his bull John strikes a deal with him to buy the calf back for $9 cash plus the children will help him with chores on the farm until their labor equals the $3 difference.

Epilogue:

"It was a fine thing to know such people, and to be one of them, and to share in their abundant love. It was a poor time, but in it we were richer than we knew. Forty years have passed, but the voices from that house are as fresh as yesterday."
