The Walton's made use of many period appropriate buildings, sets and locations. While Walton's Mountain is not a real place in name it represents the small community of Schuyler, Virginia where the show creator, Earl Hamner grew up. Towns like Charlottesville and cities like Richmond depicted in the show are in fact real places located in Virginia and there inclusion helped to blur the lines between the reality and fiction of Earl Hamner's experiences while growing up in Virginia. |

The first time John-Boy visits the University of Virginia he goes to seek medical advice. The real University is located in Charlottesville. When he applies and becomes a freshman the same set used to represent the University of Virginia is now referred to as Boatwright University. This ficticious school is named after Frederic Boatwright who served as the President of the University of Richmond from 1898 to 1945. The fictitious Boatwright is located in the Westham which is the area of Richmond where the University of Richmond is actually located in. |
