Prologue:

"Though peace had finally come to Europe in the summer of 1945, America was still faced with the considerable task of bringing the war in the Pacific to victory. It was a time of uncertainty, both for those on the home front and for the troops still overseas. During that summer my brother Jim Bob was to face a personal crisis at home, while my brother Ben fought for his very survival as a prisoner of war."

Synopsis:

Ben is locked up in Japanese prisoner of war camp with other members of his Seabees troop. He protests the Japanese flag that is being raised by singing “Heart of Dixie” the others join in. The commander of the camp becomes enraged and he fires his gun in an attempt to stop them. They run for cover in their tent laughing at their captors.

Jim-Bob receives a 10 day pass from Langley Airfield but his commander warns the young Walton that a girl keeps calling the base for him and it is his job to put an end to it. He returns home and tells his Daddy that the orders to send him overseas keeps getting cancelled and that he is home for 10 days. He tells his sisters that if he gets and phone calls to tell them he’s not there.

Jason reports in to receive new orders. Lieutenant Sanders tricks him into to thinking that he is headed to the Pacific to fight Japan. But after promising Sanders his last bit of “The Recipe” from the Baldwin’s he learns that he is headed back to Paris.

Jim-Bob tells his family a whopper of a tale in the living room. Elizabeth answer the phone and it is a girl named Kathy looking for Jim-Bob. His sisters make fun of their lady killer brother. He storms outside. Mary Ellen follows him outside and gives him some advice.

Kathy arrives at Ike’s store looking for the Walton house. Ike gives her a ride. Jim-Bob is surprised to see her and tries to avoid her during her visit. His Daddy orders him to spend time with her while she is there.

Ben and the other prisoners are forced to salute the Japanese flag. Later when doing laundery for the Japanese soldiers Ben steals the commander's Kimono and some other items in order to make an American flag to celebrate July 4th.

Jason arrives in Paris and learns that Toni Hazelton has pulled some strings to help her put on an entertainment show for the remaining troops.

Kathy tells Jim-Bob that she is expecting their baby. He doesn’t take the news well and she attempts to return to Norfolk. Jim-Bob goes after her and brings her back with news that they are getting married. Mary Ellen is not so sure about her motives and confronts Kathy. She questions the young woman about her pregnancy but Kathy becomes defensive.

Ben and his fellow inmates raise their makeshift flag. The Japanese commander discovers their insubordinance and throws Ben into the hotbox.

Kathy can’t sleep nor can Jim-Bob. She goes to see him and admits that she lied about being pregnant stating that she was just so desperate to keep him. At first he is mad but then shows compassion and consoles her.

Epilogue:

"Kathy left the following morning, and if Jim Bob ever saw her again he never mentioned it. He was quiet for the remainder of his furlough, and even Elizabeth stopped teasing him, for she was growing up, too."
