"Sometimes the future tries to warn us by casting a shadow over the present. Such a warning came to us one morning in the form of a scent of smoke borne by the wind."

She is exasperated trying to get the wood cooking stove to work. She is Bertram Hanover's daughter-in-law. Bertram was a former beau of Grandma's who had asked her to marry him but she was not interested in moving to New York with him. He became a stock broker as did his son Ted. Since loses his job due to the depression Ted has decided to bring his family back to his father's old house. It hasn't come thouh without it's challenges. The family is very spoiled by their former luxorious lifestlye in the city with vacations each summer in Europe. Ted tries to learn as much as he can from John but being raised in the city he is not really cut out to be a farmer.
Alicia, Ted's daughter desires to go back to socializing in New York where they came from. She gives one of her fancy satin dresses to Mary Ellen which only causes Mary Ellen to become upset by the things she can't have. Charles, the son shows an immediate interest in Erin but she worries that he might try to kiss her. Later when he does he is rough with Erin and acts spoiled when he doesn't get as much as he's looking for. Alicia tries to influence John-Boy to leave the mountain and head to the big city to become the writer that he desires to be. The behaviour of the Hanover children has a negative influence on the Waltons. John speaks to Ted and convinces him that the best thing he can do for his family is to return to the lifestyle that they are accustomed to. The family packs up their belongings and move back to New York.

"We were never to see the Hanovers again, although Erin did receive one letter from Charles. She carried it around for a while, pinned inside her dress over her heart, but then, a new boy came along, and the last reminder of the Hanovers went out of our lives."
