Ep.6 - The Star

  Original Airdate: October 19, 1972
Writer: John McGreevey
Director: Alf Kjellin

Prologue:

"Walton's Mountain is as old as the earth itself. For countless centuries it has quietly shouldered the sky above the land on which our family settled, built and flourished. Through all its seasons, through all the great and small events of our lives the mountain was changeless, as fixed and as permanent as the glittering stars above. And then there was an evening in the 1930s which started all of us wondering how fixed or permanent anything is, - even a star."

Synopsis:

The family witnesses a shooting star that has fallen into the "Recipe room" of the Baldwin sister's home. Grandpa suffers a sharp pain in his chest and believes that the star is an omen of his impending death.Grandpa tells John where he wishes to be buried up on the mountain. A house visit by Dr. Shackleford reveals that he is perfectly healthy but that he has lost the will to live.

John-Boy repairs the sister's roof where "the star" entered their home. Polonius, the Baldwin's cousin arrives to windfall from the star and brings his friend Col. Henderson, a promoter to help with his scheme.

Upon tasting the Baldwin's "Recipe" the Colonel figures that they can make more money in a month selling the sour mash whiskey than a lifetime of promoting the meteorite. Cousin Polonius then goes to work convincing the sisters that their recipe and still are sinful and that "the star" is a sign from their Papa that they need to stop production. He and the Colonel make plans to haul the works away for their own profit.

Meanwhile John borrows the rock from the Baldwins to show his father the burned rock that Grandpa has been so busy planning his death over. But when Grandpa learns that Polonius is trying to swindle the Baldwin sisters out of their livelihood he puts an end to their plans. The sisters celebrate Grandpa's victory by sampling some vintage "Recipe" made by the Judge himself.

Secondary Story:

Ben feels that he doesn't measure up to other members of the family who have won awards and ribbons for their achievements. He study's for a spelling bee and eventually wins first place. The family rejoices in his achievement and his father puts his ribbon "dead-center" in the middle of the trophy display, surrounded by the other awards won by his brothers and sisters.

Epilogue:

"It was not every day that a star fell on Walton's Mountain, but nearly every day brought some small miracle - the beauty of the turning seasons, the wonder of growth, and the constant revelation of all that lies in the human heart. Over it all loomed the unfailing love of our mother and father, more constant than the stars in their courses."
